"During analyst rotations, it is important to be a sponge and absorb as much as possible. Actively listen during conversations and take notes so that you can ask follow-up questions."

My Background:

I am a 2017 graduate of Emory University, where I studied Finance and International Business. I began my career at Citi in 2016 as part of the NYC Markets and Securities Services Summer Analyst. After graduation, I came back to Citi full-time. I’m currently in my second year as an AVP on the Securities Lending Desk within Equities/Prime Finance.

My role:

In my current role as part of the Securities Lending desk, which is a part of the greater Prime Finance business, I work with some of Citi’s largest hedge fund clients to securely borrow for their equity short positions. I also have the opportunity to work with many internal desks to facilitate firm shorting needs. My team gives clients access to liquidity in new IPOs, deal names and directional trades that are important to their trading business.

How I got started:

Throughout my rotations in the Markets and Securities Services program, I found both the people and the product made Prime Finance appealing. During my two analyst rotations, I supported both sales and trading. This gave me an in depth understanding of the business from very different perspectives.

A day in the life:

Day-to-day, I provide short borrow color to sales traders and clients as well as secure borrow on stocks for Hedge Fund shorts from various sources, including agent lenders and retail brokers. Every day I speak with a variety of different people which keeps the role interesting and challenges me to learn. The role is very fast paced and I find myself wearing different hats and doing many tasks throughout the trading day.

What I enjoy mosts:

I enjoy the quick pace of the trading floor environment as well as the opportunity to be a part of a large, diverse team. I enjoy that every day is different based on what is happening in the markets and client needs.

Skills check:

It is important to have strong communication and analytical skills. In the trading environment, being able to escalate issues and communicate effectively with sales traders and clients is imperative to the success of the team. The role also requires you to be able to manage and prioritize a wide slate of tasks.

Advice for others:

During analyst rotations, it is important to be a sponge and absorb as much as possible. Actively listen during conversations and take notes so that you can ask follow-up questions. Take the time to sit with sales traders/traders to learn about their product and clients as well as their take on the markets.

Why Citi?

Citi offers its employees many resources and benefits for learning and support. I have found colleagues are eager to share their experiences and knowledge. I have used this to my advantage and found many mentors. They have helped guide and push me to become a stronger analyst. Additionally, Citi’s global presence allows employees the opportunities to interact with people all over the world. If an employee is interested, there are opportunities to travel as well as move and work in various work locations.
